It is with great sadness that the business community in St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador, mourns the loss of Frank Howard, a visionary leader who passed away on December 4, 2025, after a courageous battle with cancer. He was surrounded by his family in his final moments. Frank Howard was the founder and president of Capital Auto Group, one of the most prominent automotive companies in the province. His death marks the end of an era in Newfoundland’s business world, leaving behind a legacy of integrity, success, and philanthropy.

Frank’s journey to success began more than 50 years ago, when he started with a single dealership. Through his entrepreneurial spirit, hard work, and unwavering commitment, he built what would become Capital Auto Group—an influential automotive network that now employs over 500 people across 10 automotive brands. Additionally, Frank expanded his reach with The Howard Group, which manages a significant real estate portfolio through Howard Properties. His leadership and vision transformed Capital Auto Group into a powerhouse, and he became a guiding force in the Newfoundland and Labrador business community.

Throughout his career, Frank Howard was recognized for his exceptional leadership. He was awarded the Canadian Automobile Dealers Association (CADA) Laureate Award for Ambassadorship and, more recently, was inducted into the Newfoundland and Labrador (JANL) Business Hall of Fame. These honors reflect the high regard in which he was held by his peers and the lasting impact he had on the local economy and beyond.

However, Frank’s legacy goes far beyond his business accomplishments. Known for his deep generosity, he was committed to giving back to the community that had supported him throughout his life. He was a steadfast philanthropist who contributed to a wide range of local charities and organizations, including the Health Care Foundation, Daffodil Place, Janeway Children’s Hospital, Ronald McDonald House, and The Gathering Place. His charitable work helped improve the lives of countless individuals in Newfoundland and Labrador, and his impact will be felt for generations to come.

While his professional achievements were remarkable, Frank Howard’s most cherished role was as a family man. He was deeply devoted to his wife, Annette, and took immense pride in his children: Jon (Kristy), Jordan, Mike (Maria), and Nick (Sukriti). His grandchildren—Logan, Madden, Molly, and Roman—were a source of great joy for him, and his happiest moments were spent with them. The love and support of his family were the foundation upon which Frank built his professional success.

In a statement shared by the Howard family, they expressed their gratitude to all who supported them during Frank’s illness, including the healthcare professionals at the Health Sciences Centre and The Ottawa Hospital. The family also announced that, in lieu of a wake or funeral, a celebration of life will be held in Frank’s honor. Details regarding this event will be shared at a later time.

Frank Howard’s passing is a profound loss to his family, his community, and the many individuals whose lives he touched. His legacy as a businessman, philanthropist, and devoted family man will continue to inspire those who knew him. As the Newfoundland and Labrador business community comes to terms with his loss, Frank’s impact will remain an enduring part of the province’s story for years to come.
